Siva Vithiananthan, MD is a surgeon with expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive procedures including hernia repairs, splenectomies, adrenalectomies, gallbladder and biliary surgery, colon, stomach, anti reflux, motility-disorder related surgery and intestinal surgery, as well as gastric bypass and lap-band procedures.

Prior to joining the staff at The Miriam Hospital, Vithiananthan was director for the Surgical Weight Loss Program at Winthrop University Hospital in Long Island, NY. In addition, he was Winthrop’s site director of the surgical residency and medical student program affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook School of Medicine, where he also served as an assistant professor of clinical surgery.

Vithiananthan performed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, as well as a fellowship in surgical critical care at Hartford Hospital. He completed his residency in general surgery at Baystate Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine and earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Vithiananthan has received several accolades for his commitment to the education of medical students and residents, most recently being presented the Outstanding Teaching Award by the class of 2007 at SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine for the third time. In addition, in 2006 he was awarded the highest award for teaching at the Stony Brook medical school. He has published several professional papers and has been selected to present at a number of national meetings on bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery. His current research interests include the metabolic effects of surgical weight loss surgery and integrating advanced laparoscopic skills training in residency programs.

Vithiananthan readily provides his medical expertise during national and international crises, volunteering on the medical rescue teams at Ground Zero after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, as well as on the medical relief team after the tsunami disaster in Sri Lanka in 2005.
